Every baptism is special and time for special celebration. The baptism of Linus John Carey on May 20th was a lovely family occasion, made even more special because he was baptised by his grandfather The Archbishop of Canterbury. It may seem rather daunting to have our spiritual leader in church but he made everyone feel relaxed and his uplifting sermon added to the memorable occasion.
…Songs of Praise and Dedication of the Millennium Clock. The new hymnbooks are being dedicated during this service at 7.30pm on June 10th. We hope that by the day of the service the new clock will be installed and can be dedicated at the same service.
Nineteen candidates are being presented to the Bishop of Exeter for confirmation at Bradworthy on June 13th. Nine are from Bradworthy and three from Putford. A further seven are coming from other churches in the deanery so we can look forward to a real celebration of faith.
As usual, Holsworthy Town Band will accompany our hymn singing. This year Saint John the Baptist day falls on a Sunday, so please feel welcome to attend the Songs of Praise in the Memorial Hall on Sunday June 24th and to share the refreshments afterwards.
…about Bradworthy Summer Bazaar. Bradworthy Memorial Hall has been booked for the annual church Fair to open at 2.30pm.
At the recent Bradworthy Church Annual Meeting Mike Wade did not stand again as churchwarden. He has been warden for several years and has played a full part in the life of the church. He started the Friends of the Church and keeps everything there in good order. He has been a great help in his understanding of the involved administration that comes our way now; he has been a great support to me, as has the other warden Peter Lynch, throughout the restoration. Above all Mike has always seen his work as Christian ministry and this shows in the way he has worked with others. Fortunately Mike is continuing to offer his support and continue with many of his tasks. Thanks Mike for your service, not only to the church, but, as churchwarden your service to the village community. He is to be replaced by Richard Boughton.
Over the past few weeks I have picked up on a number of rumours floating around the parishes. Rumour number one! I am not having a mobile home specially built to travel around the country on holiday. Rumour number two! The restoration work on the church has not stopped because the building firm has been dropped. When the slates were removed from the church roof the builders found many problems underneath which require extra funding from English Heritage. We met with English Heritage last October and they promised an answer by last November. I have telephoned the Bristol office several times, but the amount of extra funding is so great that it is all taking rather a long time.
There are other rumours and they are true... probably!
