Bradworthy News - May 2001

Country Commentator, by Trevor Sillifant

May time being the start of what we hope will be a good summer with days of sunshine and the hope of it not being so wet as in past years. Once more we will be returning to the Channel Isles for some work and as always some time off for relaxation in the middle of May. In January we were both delighted with the birth of our second granddaughter Stacey Kimberley, a sister for four year old Katie Elizabeth. It is also good news that Jennifer has returned to her library work, people tell she has been much missed.

People who don't often make the news…

Mrs. Pam Ham. She came to Bradworthy many years ago from the Northam area near Bideford. Being the wife of Parish Councillor Raymond Ham she worked hard with him for many years in the Lower Village grocery shop where they had a very good trade. For sometime her health was not very good, but she has now got fame at both District and National level as a first class lady bowler and has put Bradworthy on the map.

Farming news…

Recently the NFU local branches of Holsworthy and Stratton have come together with secs being Liz Cottrell and Rachel Martin. I was interested to read that in December the new group had a visit from the Shadow Minister for Agriculture who maybe gave farmers some hope of a better future?

Do you remember…

Football on Bradworthy moor? I have only been once in my life to a live football match – in fact I was just seven when farmer the late Jack Hockin took me on a cold winter’s afternoon to see Bradworthy playing another village on the moor. Not being interested in the game, but I always watch England and have a little interest in Plymouth and progress of Bradworthy.

Comment…

I read recently that on eof the party leaders spends up to £3,000 on his shoes, ties, socks, shirts and suits. I wonder if it will help him be elected and to relate to the voters. By the way his wife said that he is colour blind. How sad.

Church news…

The Methodist church employs a rural lay worker Alan Andrew from Shebbear who is hard at work dealing with people both inside and outside of the church with the problems facing them in life his contact number is 01409 281321

Statements from medical records…

(of interest to Drs. Betts and Kandasamy) “The skin was moist and dry”. “She is numb from her toes down”. “She fainted and her eyes rolled around the room”.

From the council…

The new local plan is being debated and updated and will be in force for the next eleven years. Our main concern is local needs housing. This month sees County Council elections do use your vote.

Radio and TV…

We now have TV News at 10pm on both BBC and ITV along with C4 and Sky News at the same time. I feel it was a great mistake when BBC 9pm news was moved. The Archers BBC Radio 4 has been on air for over fifty years. I must be dated for I well remember the first programme and have missed very few ever since.
