On a sunny but cold afternoon Chairman Terry Corner welcomed members old and new to the opening of the club. He paid tribute to members that had sadly died during the winter. A minute’s silence was held in memory of Ruth Wade, Edna Belsen and John Washer. Ruth was a founder and very active member both on and off the green. Only last year she had gained her county badge. On the social side she played a big part organising amongst other events our most successful Christmas lunches. Her great enthusiasm and sense of fun will be missed by all. Edna a former member, her husband had given the Ladies Pairs Cup. John had been a member for two years. The families of Edna and John had donated their woods to the club. Terry also asked everyone to remember all those too unwell to be with us and our farming community members unable to leave their farms. We all wish them well and look forward to seeing them at the club in the near future.
President Rodney Harris thanked the greenkeepers for all their hard work looking after the green during these difficult times. He then raised the flag and bowled the first wood of the season to officially declare the club open.
Members enjoyed a few ends of bowls before retreating to the clubhouse for tea, which as usual was of the highest standard.
To boost club funds the following events were held during the winter months
The social committee end their many helpers served an amazing 300 Christmas lunches. The occasion was a greet success.
An enjoyable Scottish evening was held when Mr Phillips of Morwenstow piped in the haggis as it was carried around Bradworthy Memorial Hall by Peter Wade. In keeping with tradition the haggis was addressed by Mrs Robinson of Bude before those gathered raised their glasses for the toast. 120 people then sat down and enjoyed a Scottish supper of haggis, neeps and tatties followed by a whisky-laden pudding. ‘A Bit of Luck’ provided the music for the dancing which was actively participated in. All agreed the evening had been a great success.
At the wine and wisdom eight teams of six battled their wits against questionmaster Noel Mitchell. After twelve rounds the team led by E.Ray were announced the winners. Once again it was due to all the hard work by the social committee and their helpers that made the event so enjoyable.
