Farming matters (2), by George Boughton

This farm has been done by my Dad and he runs the farm. On week days when it's wet my dad starts milking 6.00am in the morning and 2.00pm in the afternoon. Simon and mum milks at 10.00pm at night. They do love it, they do. On Sunday Simon does the milking at 2.00pm in the afternoon. My dad said to him if we go on well we have to do 4 times a day milking that's what I think. My dad checks the dry cows and make sure they have calves or not before he starts milking.

Every night and every day my mum checks the milkers when she has finished milking. I help my mum milk the cows if my dad goes to an NFU meeting which he finds fun. He might say we will stop 3 times a day milking and he might say we will do 4 times a day milking, that's what he might say this week. I hope so any way as that means we have to start at 5.00am and 11.00am in the morning, 5.00pm and 11.00pm at night. I love doing it so we can do it much more better now. It is fine now Sam does the calibrating and the parlour and she does the milk recording with my dad as well I think. She is good at that. We are doing really well, that's why last Saturday before the end of the month we inject the dry cows. My mum inject the milker and my dad milked them as well and that's good. I love it too we have to do three times a day milking every day and night. That's good, everybody loves it, so if my dad says we got to stop three times a day milking we will start doing four times a day milking. It is good to go on well.
