Bradworthy News - March 2001

Editorial, by Phil Mayhall

Well, that's it then. The first issue of the Bradworthy News was in April 1981 - so with this issue the magazine has just completed its twentieth year. I wonder if anyone ever expected it to drag on so long? Sorry, that should read "I wonder if anyone ever expected it to go on so long?" Or maybe not!

Wind-farms seem to dominate this issue - I can't think why. Never one to wade in… Eric got an interesting e-mail from West Coast Energy recently stating that, nationally, wind energy accounts for 2.2% of renewable energy - and that 2.5% of all energy comes from renewable sources (I think I've remembered the figures correctly). For those not too hot on percentages that's not a lot of not a lot. I calculate that's enough to provide the country with about one minute of electricity … every two days. Still, as I am expected to remain even handed and unbiased on all matters (as if!) once we get to the government's 'target' of 10% renewable energy the contribution from 'wind' will clearly rise to a really useful four minutes every two days.

Thanks to me for doing the cover. The deadline for the April issue is the 20th March. Copy to the editor, Phil Mayhall, Hillcrest, Lower Village (tel 241748, fax:241167, e-mail: phil@bradworthy.co.uk)
