Another murder book I'm afraid, but with a bit of romance thrown in. It's a story involving members of a West End theatre company who are staying in a large Scottish mansion for a reading of a controversial new play. So controversial in fact, that it's the playwright who is murdered. The Scotland Yard inspector, who happens to live in Cornwall, is sent all the way up to Scotland , only to find that it's the love of his life that is the prime suspect. A coincidence or what?
I've read some of this authors' books before and I vaguely remember enjoying them, but I found this book tedious and muddled. This book was written only twelve years ago, but it has something of an Agatha Christie feel about it and could have been written seventy years ago. The characters have names like Simon Allcourt-St James who is a forensic scientist and Lady Helen Clyde, the prime suspect. There seems to be too many suspects in it, none of whom are loveable or worth worrying about.
It took me ages to read this book, not because it's that long, I just kept falling asleep.
If you are suffering from insomnia, I strongly recommend it, but for those who can sleep, well…
Happy Reading, the Bradworthy Book Reviewer
