Bradworthy News - December 2000

Crime prevention, by Bob Tollafield, Crime Prevention Officer, Bideford Police Station

In the Torridge District the overwhelming majority of car crime is opportunistic. If you give them an opportunity they'll take it.

Remove the temptation

Belongings, even an old coat on the back seat is a target for someone to "smash and grab". Don't leave anything on display - it's a prime invitation for passers by.

Doors and windows

Lock all doors, close all windows and shut the sunroof every time you leave your car unattended - however briefly. Cars get broken into in the few seconds that a car is out of the driver's sight. Lockable fuel caps are also advisable.

Driving

When driving it makes sense to keep valuables out of sight and all doors locked and windows closed, especially in city centres. Thieves wait at traffic lights and target handbags on display. When the vehicle stops they smash the window, reach in, grab the handbag and run off.

Parking

If you do not have a garage consider the following: lighting, natural surveillance (i.e. Is the car overlooked?) and positioning (can you park in such a way that it blocks access to your petrol cap?). If you are going somewhere in the evening, make sure that you park as close to lighting as possible and a busy street if possible.

Consider extra security devices on the vehicle. Many thieves target alloy wheels - obtain locking wheel nuts. CD players are highly prized by thieves - remove them if possible or have one that has a front that can be taken off. Try to mark your stereo with the vehicle registration number or postcode.

Get your windows etched with your vehicle registration number.

Consider having an immobiliser fitted to your car. For further information on this subject call the Vehicle Security national helpline - 0870 5502006.

Steering wheel locks and other security devices are good deterrents to car thieves. However the handbrake - gearstick device is not effective.

Never leave your keys in your car. It is also illegal to leave your car with it's engine running whilst you "pop into the newsagent." Not only are you liable to a fine, a thief will jump in and drive off in seconds.

Once again - Deter the opportunist thief, they are a thorn in the side of all of us! At all Torridge Police Stations you can obtain a free "Don't Bother" card. This initiative is devised to remind you to remove all items from sight. You then place the card on your dashboard and the message reads "Don't Bother, This Vehicle Has Been Emptied Of All Valuable Items!" This scheme has been a great success in Bristol and we are pushing the scheme here in Torridge and North Devon.
