Bradworthy News - December 2000

Country Commentator, by Trevor Sillifant

Jennifer and I wish you a very happy Christmas and all the best for the New Year. Come though long expected Jesus, Born to set they people free, From our fears and sins release us, Let us find our rest in thee.

This year we hope to be spending a real family Christmas as last year was not a normal one for us because of Jennifer's and my late fathers illness' I look forward to seeing you at local Christmas services and Carols round the tree where we can enter into the celebrations of the festival.

People who don't often make the news…

Mrs. Susan Downing. Susan is the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Tom Cann. You can often find her working in Martins shop and she always gives service with a cheerful smile. She is active in our community life and worships at the Methodist Church. Much of her time is spent looking after and caring for her Aunt, Mrs. Emma Gilbert. In fact kindness, caring and being helpful is part of her life.

Farming news…

The Methodist Church in Cornwall is to provide funds for the next five years for a part time Farming Chaplain to deal with farmer's problems. MAFF have brought in a new cattle herd registration project known as CTS, Cattle Tracing System, which will form a database. Also this year there have been changes to cattle ear tags with a check digit.

Jokes…

Why did the two elephants go for a swim? Because they wanted a pair of swimming trunks. Gamekeeper: There's no fishing allowed here. Boy: I'm not fishing, I'm washing my pet maggot. What did the beaver say to the tree? It was nice gnawing you.

Fact file…

There are 25,000 police officers in the metropolitan police force. By about the age of 7 most children have already tasted an alcoholic drink. Each year in Britain over 800 people are killed in a road crash because of drivers being over the legal limit.

Comment… this year's Fair

It now seems a long time ago that many of us locals and visitors spent our august bank holiday Monday at this fifth and very successful event. This was the last that hardworker and chairperson Jane Addy would act as chairman of the committee.

As this event takes a lot of hard work to be organised more people need to be involved to continue to make the fayre a yearly event. Many comments have reached me that this was one of the best fayers and enjoyed by all. We all most of us have very busy lives but an event such as this is most worthwhile so I feel the support will I hope be forthcoming for next year.

Church news…

Back in the summer, whilst on holiday, the Archbishop of Canterbury was in the village and went to a service in the Church Room conducted by the Rev. Richard Dorrington. He is reported to have said that Bradworthy is a good village and he enjoyed his visit. As his son has bought a local house we may be seeing more of him. As someone said all the best people find their way to Bradworthy.

What they said…

I am delighted to open Bradworthy Fair. Mrs. Lizzie Balsdon. Broadcaster Terry Wogan is out of date, out of touch and arrogant - BBC Chief. We will have more police - Tony Blair. I am a guina pig in aids vaccine trial - Dr. Evan Harris, Lib Dem MP. I may retire - England cricketer Mike Atherton.

From the papers…

A former petrol pump attendant John Easton from Ilfracombe won a TV talent competition. A new casualty department has been opened at the NDDH. There is a plan to make roads safer in the Bideford area with a spend of £150,000. John Burnett our MP wants to stop flooding in the Taddiport area. The average price of a house in the south west has reached £100,000.
