Tamar Lakes Volunteer Scheme, by Ashley Starr

logoThe South West Lakes Trust has a volunteer scheme, which allows members of the public to help with conservation projects, and Tamar Lakes is looking for new recruits.

The independent charitable Trust manages over forty inland waters throughout Cornwall, Devon and West Somerset, and will aim to provide sustainable conservation, recreation, education and access for the benefit of all.

The conservation projects are designed to conserve the lakes and their surroundings, and to enhance wildlife at each of the sites for everyone to enjoy. Projects include, habitat management, surveying and monitoring, and some practical work.

Tamar Lakes consists of two reservoirs; Lower Tamar Lake has been delegated as a nature reserve, and Upper Tamar Lake provides recreational activities, as well as supplying water for the North Devon area.

These lakes are an important environment for wildlife, such as Wading birds, and Wildfowl, including Great Crested Grebe, King Fishers, and Common Sand Piper.

The Volunteer Conservation Group will assist with wildlife enhancement at Tamar Lakes, and will meet once a month. Projects will include tree planting, bird surveys, footpath improvements, tree care and wetland management.

If you would like to become a volunteer at Tamar Lakes, please contact Ashley Starr, on (01288) 321262 for further details.
