Once more the season of the year turns to Autumn and the shorter days. The last of the Harvest Festivals takes place and clearing of this year's garden and field produce is underway. Thinking back to our Spring visit to Guernsey and Alderney which was as usual busy but with some free time it was good that both Jennifer and I enjoyed as always the unspoilt beaches and stunning seascapes. We are counting the days to next year's visit.
Mrs Shirley Davis, organic farmer's wife, Methodist Church organist and helper with Girl Guides, Brownies and Rainbows. Shirley is a very cheerful and kind lady who is busy being involved in village and community life. She works hard in all that she does and is a real asset to the Bradworthy area. Shirley we thank you, and keep up your worthwhile and good works.
In spite of the late wet Spring there has been a good crop of grass and most corn looks well. I recently received from MAFF a booklet about BSE, which was at its peak in 1993. It would seem that early reporting of suspect BSE is a must as there is no charge for a farm visit that may well be a false alarm. Also up to 100% of the value is paid in compensation. But the fact is that farmers and public wish that no such thing as BSE had ever happened.
If you don't like the way you were born, try being born again. God so loved the world that He did not send a committee. There will be no reduction in the wages of sin. Trouble sleeping? Come and hear one of our sermons.
Over the years I have been a supporter of the Donkey Sanctuary Trust near Sidmouth to help save donkeys in distress. It was started in 1969 by Mrs. E Svendsen who used to live near Thurdon and I remember interviewing her when the Trust became a charity in 1973. She received an MBE for her work in 1980. The trust has 11 farms, 5 welfare officers, 200 staff and over 60 volunteers. Admin costs are only 6p in the pound.
The new Torridge District Local plan will be in force until 2011. In this there will be new land being used for housing and some industrial use as well as additional playing/football area. Over a recent years I believe a fair balance of our local needs have been considered and acted upon. I think we all want to see our village continue to be one of the best in Devon. Bradworthy has a character of its own, long may it continue, it is part of country life.
Mrs. Marjorie Davey from Chilsworthy has somewhat of a record. In fact she has been playing the organ at Chilsworthy Methodist Church for sixty years. Now in her eightieth year she tells me that it is her hope to continue to take her turn at the organ for Sunday services.
I am lucky to be alive - jockey Frankie Dettori after an air crash. I have had my £10000 watch nicked - ex MP Steve Norris. I cannot get a lover - Geri Halliwell.
The Labour Party have been targeting the Oxbridge snobs. Carol Vorderman of Countdown TV fame has one of the world's best figures. A driver who took too many anti depressant pills drove 93 miles the wrong way down a motorway.
This year it was 6o years ago that the little ships brought back much of the British Army from the beaches of Dunkirk. Many believe that this was a unique moment in British history. Although it was a defeat it went on to lead to victory. We should never forget what happened at Dunkirk 60 years ago. Alan Balsdon had given up as parish Council Chairman and we thank him for his service to the Council and the community for the past two years. Bill Jarvis, a long standing member of the Council, takes over as Chairman and school teacher, Mrs. M. Coles, as Vice Chairman.
