Bradworthy News - July 2000

Country Commentator, by Trevor Sillifant

In July I am reminded that the old country people used to talk about dog days which meant in this month it could be hot and close and sometimes with rain as well. Midsummer is also the time when many enjoy their holidays at home or abroad. In March I spent 2 days in the village of Mullion and before conducting a Sunday morning service I spent a little time walking around Poldhu Cove with its countryside and beach. This is a delightful place to visit if you are in the Lizard area.

People who do not often make the news…

Derek Bond. He spent his early years in the village, at college and as a servicemen in the RAF. He is a member of the long time Bradworthy Bond family. Most of his working life was spent as the local postmaster and shop keeper. On retirement he set about helping his son Chris Bond the well known and popular estate agent. Derek was for a time a member of the parish council and in his life has given much service to the community in many ways.

Comment…

The National Health Service. Many feel this service needs more funding and shorter waiting time for treatment. From Jennifer's point of view she found it a good service of treatment and care during her illness. I was pleased to be asked by Carlton Television way back in March to take part in the programme 'A Healthy Future' which some of you saw. I was able to say that the NHS can be first class with life saving treatments and that for us we owe it much praise and thanks.

Church News…

The Rev. Richard Dorrington is a very busy and active man now being made rector of five of his parishes, being made rural dean, member of the parish council, and a skittler. This month we say farewell to our Methodist Minister the Rev. John Peak who now moves to Northlew in the West Devon Methodist Circuit.

Farming news…

We were pleased that our few beef cattle have passed the yearly TB test. In fact in all our years farming at both Kimworthy and here in Trebarwick we have never yet had a rector. My vet tells me that in future TB testing will be put out to tender.

Fact file…

The number of people tuning in to BBC Radio 4 each week is 9.2 million. 1.4 million only listen to Radio 4. Last year presenters and programmes from Radio 4 received 18 Sony Radio Awards.

Jokes…

What do you do when a pig cuts himself? Put oinkment on the cut. Which bird is always out of breath? A puffin. Which comedians can cure indigestion? The two Rennies.

What they said…

“I will make a better BBC” Greg Dyke. “I am now an actor” Michael Barrymore. “We will win the next election” William Hague. “Holsworthy is now on the map” Cllr D. Shadrick. “I will miss Bradworthy and its people” Rev. J. Peak. “I remember you from radio” TV presenter Richard Bath to TS.

From the papers…

The government says it has just six months to save the Health Service. Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain has been sold for £450,000. People fantasise more about winning millions on the lottery than about sex claims a new survey. Visitors to the Millennium Dome continue to decrease. Barclays Bank have closed 172 branches.

Roundup…

Both Jennifer and myself much enjoyed our 4 day visit in the Spring being our fourth year to Pembrokeshire. This years trip there was somewhat low key spending time just relaxing and on country and coastal walks in fine and bright weather. However we did visit Tenby, Saundersfoot, Wiseman's Bridge and Amroth. We did our bit by supporting Welsh farmers by having meals of Welsh beef and lamb.
