Bradworthy News - June 2000

Country Commentator, by Trevor Sillifant

By the time you read this Jennifer and myself will have returned from our visit to the Channel Islands. The cost of the air fares seems to be ever on the increase which is stopping people from visiting there in fact you can go to the USA for less than the cost of flying from Exeter airport to JEA.

June is a busy time for farmers and growers with the Royal Cornwall Show and many other local events.

I recently read that the we farmers and Countryside drelles are less than two percent who can vote so one wonders if any government will take any notice of us?

People who don't often make the news…

Mrs. Daphne Nicholls. Mrs Nicholls and her husband who builds racing cars have been with us for a number of years. She had a very bad motor accident some years ago when she worked as a representative but has made a good recovery. She is very interested in all that goes on in the village and as a member of the public she often comes to parish council meetings and has local concerns for village life.

Farming news…

Farmers are reminded that they must renew shotgun certificates and recently as a Councillor I have been signing them free of charge so if you need help with the forms please contact me now. Also livestock payments are at risk if tags and cattle id are not in order this is for beef and dairy farmers to note. More pig farmers are getting out of the pig industry and last year sows being kept for breeding were down by 85,000.

Church news…

Our very busy vicar and parish councillor the Rev. Richard Dorrington now has another role being made the rural dean. The Rev. Paddy Kayle supt minister of the Bude Circuit of the Methodist Church is this years chairman of Churches Together in Bude.

In the Holsworthy circuit at Titson a new youth church called Activate is reaching out the young peoples needs.

Fact file…

Passive smoke contains 1000s of harmful chemicals. 3,500 people are killed or seriously injured in drink drive accidents. Cannabis is a class B drug. It is illegal to have, sell or give away.

Comment…

Has Lady Jane got the real power? I was very interested recently watching a profile on TV about Lady Jay a former TV reporter, now in the house of Lords as a Labour life peer and minister for women. She changed the format of the House of Lords, made womans rights a strong point of her work and has been battling for stronger sentences for those who commit rape. She came across as a very powerful lady who would do anything for people who she felt had right on their side, dare I say I am quite a fan we need more like her in public life.

Jokes…

Fred: What were you in the army? Ed: A deserter. Fred: You mean you ran away? Ed: No, I went round with the puddings after meals. “Why do dragons sleep in the daytime?” Because they liked to hunt knights. “Do you know how long goats should be milked?” Same as short ones.

What they said…

The church has a role to play in farmers problems (Ben Gill of the nfu). I have a fear of flying (Tony Blair, PM). I will run the lottery (Sir Richard Branson. I am not going Tory (Lib. Dem. MP John Burnett). I am not the thinking mans crumpet (broadcaster Joan Bakewell)

From the papers…

The sexiest woman in Britain is Eastenders actress Tamzin Outhwaite. A new food labelling bill has been passed by MPs. Devon is to get more policeman. Bradworthy will try to win this year's best kept village competition.

Round up…

For the last sixteen years I have been a member of the Holsworthy Rotary Club which I have very much enjoyed which has given me the opportunity of being of service to the club and the community. As a PR officer over the years I have been happy to serve Rotary International I feel it is an honour that the club's membership have made me this years vice president and hopefully next years president.

In the Spring it was a real delight to visit the Gnome Reserve at Putford and to meet its founder Ann Atkin for BBC Radio Cornwall. This is the biggest and first reserve in the world and yes like I first went there for Radio twenty one years ago I did wear a gnomes hat during the interview.
