Parish Council report, by Paul Clarke

At the Annual Meeting of Bradworthy Parish Council, Councillor Bill Jarvis was elected Chairman in place of Councillor Alan Balsdon who wished to stand down after two years. He was thanked for his help and guidance during his time in office. Councillor Mrs. Margaret Coles was elected Vice-chairman.

Best kept village competition

Councillors Jane Addy and Trevor Sillifant were thanked for cleaning up weeds and litter around the Square and adjacent roads. While many had tidied up outside their own properties no one joined the Councillors in their mission but were willing to offer comment and advice.

Waste recycling

Bradworthy collected 33.4 tonnes of various items in 1999-2000 mainly glass at 13.4 tonnes, paper at 14.8 tonnes and tins at 2.1 tonnes.

Torridge district local plan

Comments are required on the proposed adjustments made following the previous consultation. Councillors consider there is too much new land for housing suggested, being there are already several large areas with planning permission yet to be developed. Proposed industrial estate expansion may be too close to future residential development. Additional Playing Field is preferred at Honnacotts, North Road.

Flower beds and boxes

There is a flower bed in the Square requiring a sponsor to maintain it. In the first place please contact Mrs Eileen Trewin with any offers. Alan Balsdon was thanked for kindly making and donating the flower boxes to be fixed around the village signs.

Road name plates and other village signs

The District Council will be reminded that several signs need refurbishing.

Environment directory

The North Devon environment directory covers local and national organisations, both voluntary and statutory concerned with the environment. The parish Council hold a copy and another has been placed in the Memorial Hall.

Street lighting

Two additional lamps have been erected in Tuckers Park and are awaiting connection to the power supply.


The annual parish meeting for Bradworthy

The Chairman of Bradworthy Parish Council, Cllr. Alan Balsdon chaired the meeting on 26th April. Seven other Councillors, the local organisation reporters, Mrs. Daphne Nicholls and Graham Andrews (N.D. Journal) were present.

Local organisation reports

The main points reported upon were:

Chapel

(report by Cllr. Trevor Sillifant) Minister Rev. John Peak had been appointed to North Lew and Bradworthy would again come under the Hartland Circuit with Rev John Kendall.

Neighbourhood Watch

(Cllr. Sillifant) continued to work well. It is hoped that Community Constable Amanda Brown will be able to get more involved at Parish level.

Langdon Charity

(Cllr. Sillifant, Secretary) Capital assets are slowly rising. The Charity exists to help the poor of the parish. Even today assistance is paid out annually.

Church

(Cllr. Rev Richard Dorrington, Rector) Encouraging improvement all round. He pays regular visits to the school. Church restoration is in progress. New curtains, carpets and alter rail kneelers are in place. Electrical re--wiring and organ restoration are needed. Churchyard maintenance costs about andpound;800 a year.

Memorial Hall

(Cllr. Alan Balsdon) the refurbishment is virtually complete. The computer provided and operated through a County Council scheme has been presented to the hall. The Cecil Collacott Room was being fitted out with display units.

Bowling Club

(Written report from Mrs Pam Ham, President) Best year ever. The Ladies won the County Pairs; five awarded County Badges. The Men were County Champions. Charities supported were Breathe Easy, ARC and Childrens Hospice SW.

Girl Guides - Rainbows and Brownies

(Mrs. Shirley Davis and Mrs. Diane Heard.) Guides are expanding and have tried several new crafts. Litter picking in the village this year produced 7 bags of rubbish.

Twinning

(Mr Richard Boughton) Audrieu was visited last year and they are making a return visit this June.

Wednesday Club

(Mrs. Eve Wonnacott, Treasurer) 12 lady members. A hot lunch is provided. Varied activities are enjoyed and a library is available. A recently purchased wheelchair is available for village use not just for club members. Own fundraising of almost andpound;400 is a commendable effort toward running costs.

Bradworthy Local Agenda 21 Group

(Cllr. Jane Addy , Chair) Bradworthy Fayre goes from strength to strength. Funds for community projects is available from TAG 21. The Group has assisted the Millennium Garden Project with grant applications and has donated andpound;500. Events planned are for opening of Millennium garden, guided walk and activities connected with the Berridon Community Wood.

Bradworthy Carnival

(Mr. Richard Boughton, Secretary) Costs of the procession exceeds income collected on the day. Other events in Carnival week and throughout the year keep the carnival afloat. Donations to local organisation have had to be reduced.

Kneelers Project

(Mrs. Enid Clarke) outlined the project culminating with dedication of the kneelers on Easter Sunday. She brought one of the kneelers to the meeting which was greatly admired for its craftmanship.

The Chairman thanked those reporting.

Millennium Projects Committee

Chairman, Cllr. Mrs. Margaret Coles thanked all those who assisted with the New Year celebrations.

Cllr. Ham was appalled at the amount of weeds in and around the Square. Cllrs. Jane Addy and Trevor Sillifant offered to tidy the area. It was hoped to get other rubbish strewn areas cleaned up.

Clerk's Report

Fouling by dogs

Cllr Sillifant circulated a TDC report. Councillors wanted tough action against offending owners.

Flower boxes around the village signs

Permission has been obtained from DCC for the parish council to position these.

Tuckers Park safety fencing against North Road

TDC has drawn up plans for this fencing to prevent children running on to the highway.

Torridge District local plan

Public comments are required on the proposed alterations by noon 23rd June direct to Torridge District Council.

Planning - Hartland Forest Golf Club etc

Bradworthy as an adjoining parish can comment on the amended proposals.

Best kept village competition

Cllr. Ham was appalled at the amount of weeds around the Square. Other areas with various rubbish and litter problems were mentioned. Cllrs. Jane Addy and Trevor Sillifant went around the village on Bank Holiday Monday and collected 4 barrow loads of weeds and rubbish.

Unidentified persons with clip boards were seen in the village looking in places on the judging list on Friday 12th May- so may be judging has taken place.
