Easter this year was certainly memorable. All four services at Bradworthy, Bulkworthy (combined with Abbots Bickington), Putford and Sutcombe were all well attended and special in their own way. The Bradworthy Family Communion was memorable because of the dedication of the new altar kneeler. This has been a labour of love, devotion and sore fingers for two years now and, after around 2,500,000 stitches the kneeler adorned the church on Easter Day. Due to the restoration the kneeler has now been stored away for a few weeks, and then anyone who wants a closer look can see it in place in the church. Thanks to all who played a part in making this beautiful and remarkable work of art.
Thankfully this is now well under way. All seems to be going well, although the first slates removed revealed a colony of bats. This meant a call to English Nature for advice.
The firm engaged on the restoration are based in Bristol. English Heritage is giving a substantial grant and they instructed the architect to contact approved historic building restorers.
No, not another parish! The Land's End Trial is the event that led to over 350 old vehicles putt-putting through Bradworthy on Easter eve. Negotiating Sutcombe was another matter altogether. Close by Sutcombe church is a road with a warning sign, 'Unsuitable For Motor Vehicles'. Certainly it was unsuitable for some, but thankfully most managed the hill in some style. From 4.00am onwards a group of ladies from Sutcombe church served tea, coffee and bacon sandwiches to the oily, greasy and mud splattered competitors. What fun! Thanks ladies for this ingenious way of raising funds for Sutcombe church.
As ever, if I can help in any way please contact me at the Rectory on 241411.
