Bradworthy News - April 2000

Computer club, by Mike Wade

On 5th January 2000 the Bradworthy computer club was inaugurated at a meeting in the Memorial Hall. At this meeting Mike Wade outlined the aims of the club. Very briefly, these are to provide foundation courses for those people with no, or very limited, knowledge of computers who are anxious to learn how to use one; to hold club nights where help, advice and trouble-shooting can be given and an exchange of ideas and practice of computing skills can take place; to offer courses and workshops on all aspects of computing; to invite speakers to offer more specialist information; and to explore the possibility of buying computers and software for members at discounted prices. It was also stated that close ties would be formed with the Meddon computer club which will be up and running in the near future.

An annual membership fee of £16 was agreed and also a session fee of £3 per person for workshops and courses. The following officers and members were elected on to the committee:

ChairmanTony Harper
SecretaryTim Onyon
TreasurerShaun Heard
Committee MembersMike Wade
Eileen Cole
Leslie Cole
Dave Regardsoe

At the first committee meeting the club rules and conditions were ratified and at a subsequent club meeting on 26th January it was agreed that Mike Wade would run two 10 week foundation courses concurrently on Wednesdays from 2-4p.m. and 7-9p.m., at a course fee of £30 for members and £50 for non-members, this fee to be paid in advance. Each of these courses could take 10 people on a first come first served basis. We are pleased to report that both courses started on 9th February and were fully subscribed. A waiting list for future foundation courses has already been started.

A weekend workshop is to be run by Tim Onyon and Mike Wade in conjunction with the Meddon computer club on the subject of graphic software packages and their use with scanners and digital cameras. The workshop will be in two sessions of 2 hours each. The first session will take place on Saturday 25th March from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the second session on the Saturday 1st April at the same time. The venue for the workshop is the computer room at Meddon Village Hall. As the first workshop is already fully booked, another workshop, on the same subject, will be held in Bradworthy in the near future. The cost will be £3.00 for each session. Full details will be published in the next club newsletter.
