Many of you may be aware of a relatively new holistic therapy, which is presently going through a popular spell. Some of you may have been tempted to have a treatment, others maybe sceptical of any new holistic therapy, and most people are still unsure of what reflexology is all about. Well, the following short script is written to give you a short history of reflexology, and how it can be if benefit to all. Many people are now becoming more aware of the fact that holistic treatments such as reflexology, reiki, aromatherapy, shiatsu, and others can play a major part in a persons well-being. The idea that these treatments are a luxury, or a beauty treatment, or even being pampered, are rapidly being replaced by the realisation that treatments such as these, actually have been researched thoroughly , and have been proven to be of benefit to peoples well-being. The benefits of regular treatments include, reduction of stress, relaxation , and that they are conducive to the bodies promotion of healing.
Reflexology is actually an art and science and has been around since ancient civilisation. The people of China, India, and Egypt practiced reflexology thousands of years ago. In 1979, drawings dating back to 2000BC, were found in a cave in Saqqara, Egypt, which showed the giving and receiving of foot treatments. In 1913, Dr William Fitzgerald from Connecticut, USA, began using zone therapy as a form of treatment, and found that certain areas on the foot affected other regions of the body. He researched this , and began writing articles on the benefits of zone therapy, which later developed into what we know today as reflexology. He used this to perform minor operations, without having to use any anaesthesia. It proved to be a great success. He began to teach his methods to students.
Eunice Ingham was one of his students. She later went on to map the reflex points onto the feet, and was therefore considered to be the founder of modern reflexology.
Today reflexology is being practiced in hospitals, complementary health centres, and private practices. It is also used by some midwives for their clients during labour in some NHS Trust hospitals.
Reflexology is a non invasive therapy which helps the body's ability to heal itself, by the application of digital pressure to the reflex points on the feet, which correspond to the organs of the body. This gives an autonomic nervous response which helps to create a balance throughout the body.
Stress is not a modern concept. It has always been around, and it is a part of being human . We need a certain amount of stress in order to function as a human being. Stress becomes problem however, when it gets out of hand. The stress we feel resulting from problems at work and in the home, in fact stress from all areas, can eventually take its toll on our lives, leading to the body's defences breaking down, which then results in the body being more susceptible to illness and disease. Reflexology can be used for a variety of conditions. It helps to reduce stress, assists relaxation, thereby enabling the body to heal itself and rebalance its energies. It can be effective in boosting the immune system, increasing the circulation, removing toxins and generally enhancing physical and mental well-being
Treatments begin with the reflexologist taking a medical history and any problems can be discussed. You would be made comfortable, usually in a reclining position . The therapist works on both feet. A soothing foot massage precedes and ends the treatment. Music can be played during treatment if desired by the client.
The length of treatment is between one to one and a half hours. Prices vary from £15 to £20. per treatment.
Regularity of treatments also varies, but depends on the clients wishes and can range from weekly to 6 weekly appointments.
