Bradworthy Inn Beer Fest

When I heard of a beerex to be held on just Bank Holiday Monday, I thought “Odd, it'll never sell out in just one day. A one-day event is the hardest to run. Either that or the choice is going to be pretty small”.

Well I was wrong on both counts. What I didn't know was that it was also the village country fair. The place was heaving, in the square were animals (mostly horses), craft stalls with demonstrations, and horse and cart rides. A barbeque at the side entrance to the pub yard pointed the way to the ale: all under canvas and cooled by silica gel blankets, which work well and don't cost the earth. There were twenty ales up for offer by a buxom young lady in an old fashioned wenches dress - “Steady, lads, steady”. With the exception of about three all were westcountry ales. There was a good showing from Clearwater, with “Russian Sturgeon”, “Cavalier” and “Torridge Old English”. There was also Smile's “Glorious 12th”, which 1 hadn't heard of before, and others from Summerskills, Sharps, Blackawton, Exmoor, Cotleigh, Stonhenge, Butcombe, R.C.H. , Prineetown, Castle Eden, Adnams, and Timothy Taylor “Landlord”. Yesss! Oh, and one or two others whose names I can't remember - but they were all good on the day.

There was plenty of entertainment to keep us amused while supping, provided mainly by a group of Romany musicians playing a range of traditional folk, country, and rock & roll. It seemed that anyone who wanted to was welcome to get up and have a go, and it was surprising how good they all sounded when you'd had a few. The atmosphere was something like 1 hadn't seen in a long time - a real, good old village do. Well done to Alan, Lesley and all.
