Jennifer and I offer to you all the season's greetings with the hope that Christmas and the New Year, the first in the next century, will be a time of enjoyment and peace in our lives to face the future.
See you at Christmas and the New Year services and with carols around the tree in the Square.
Many locals have visits during the week from Home Help Ladies who give a good service to those who are in need. I know that they are most appreciated for all they do and that a vote of thanks is due to them all. I do not know all of them so if I have missed someone out do please forgive me. Thanks to Ann Manning, Dot Clarke, Sheila Raffe and Beryl Quance and I believe Beryl Colwill and Diana Walter help s well.
One Sunday morning, way back in the summer, I presented a short interview and the fine singing voice of Mrs. Bryony Dorrington on the Dawn Chorus programme on BBC Radio Cornwall which is on air from 6am to 7am each Sunday morning. Many of you have told me you missed the broadcast which was well received, but if you contact me I can let you have a copy of the tape.
What's bad tempered but loves custard? - Apple grumble. When does a driver never break the speed limit? - When it's a screwdriver. How do ghosts travel? - On fright trains.
At this year's Woolsery Show it was good to see the return of Jerseys in the cattle classes as well as a strong class of Dexter cattle. Local horse class prize winners were Mr. & Mrs. Brewington, Mrs. Inch and Mr. & Mrs. Clarke. The NFU are asking farmers to make sure they have updated farm insurance to cover the cost of claims.
I am superman - Deputy PM, John Prescott MP. I want to remain ordinary - Countess of Wessex. The builder did a good job on Bradworthy Hall - Dr. Norman Betts. We have lifted the beef ban - Nick Brown MP.
Prince William at just seventeen passed his driving test the first time. A man aged 92 also passes his driving test first time. A new stadium costing £500 million is to be built at Wembley, London. For every £20 worth of petrol we buy we pay £17 pounds tax. (What a rip off.)
The county of Devon has the most roads in the country. The Suffolk Punch horse is the oldest breed of horse in the world. Thirty years ago men first landed on the moon. Over 300 people work for TDC.
As we come to the end of this century with all that has happened, which will be recorded in history, many events and people stand out. One of the greatest was man's first walk on the moon. As well as inventions like radio, TV, the milking machine, cars, aeroplanes, advances in the health field with people living longer. The down side has been two world wars, misuse of drugs and Aids. The decline of morals, poverty, man's greed for money and power and exploiting others. In fact I believe it has been wonderful to have lived in the present age as after all it is Gods World, not man's.
As for people we all have our list. Sir Winston Churchill, Second World War Hitler German Dictator, Marconia Radio, Logi Baird, TV's Lord Soper and Billy Graham forthright preachers. Life and times of Princess Diana and the saintly life of Mother Teresa. Mrs. Thatcher, first lady PM. Dr. Christian Barnard, first world heart transplant and so I could go on. Local people who have made their mark and to be remembered include Tom Cann, Dr. Norman Betts, Cecil Collacott, W. J. Cory, Herbert Wickett, Ruby Pomeroy, Angela Yeo, Mrs. Nancey Seldon, Pam Ham, Miss C. Ashton and the Rev. Peter Sutton as well as Mrs. Anne Shadrick MBE.
See you in the year 2000.
NB: For Round up next time how about your list of the century?
