The weather for the fair was fair. Well very pleasant really. We enjoyed sitting in the pub garden watching the world go by for a while.
I have been rather surprised at the number of notices for Wine and Wisdom evenings. Last year they seemed to be easing up a bit, so I guess we'll need to start reading the TV guides again so we know what's what and who's who in all the soaps.
Some of you may have noticed that the Bradworthy News is no longer available from the Bradworthy Post Office and Stores. Here's why
Mr Mayhall has seen fit for over five years or so, to run a campaign against any initiative this business has deemed it necessary to deploy. In his last salvo prior to this current one, denigrating our chip shop with tired rhetoric concerning smells, litter and so on in the Bradworthy News. This piece of blatant propaganda was dispensed prior to it even opening.
This was submitted by, or on behalf of, the Lindsay's as part of the documentation supporting the recent planning application for their bistro - we had lodged an objection. (application 1/1014/99/11/114, page 160 of file)
Readers who don't bin old copies of the Bradworthy News may care to search through my editorials for any 'denigration of chip-shop', for any mention of 'smells, litter and so on'. You might even try to find evidence for a 'campaign'. You'll struggle, because it's not there - simply, it's a lie. The only mention of 'chip-shop', anywhere in any issue of the Bradworthy News that I've been able to find, is in the self-congratulatory item titled Mushy p's plaice which appeared in the March 1999 issue, written by Mr. Alan Lindsay surprise, surprise.
What really annoys us most, however, is this - also part of the (very public) documents supporting the Lindsay's application (page 163 of file)
Incidentally they are account holders here, for that very reason of being able to purchase whisky!
For the last 12 years we have had accounts with most stores, garages, etc in the village - as I'm sure that many readers also have. We had always expected that the details of our account were a private matter between Mary and I and the store in question. Obviously not, in some cases. You will not be too surprised to learn that we have closed the account!
Presumably the following was submitted (page 163 of file) because it supports the Lindsay's planning application in some way.
his (Mr. Mayhall) own drinking habits are well known in the village. In that he operates to almost military like precision in gaining his position in the local hostelry every night by ten o'clock. Whereupon by 'closing' time he is usually held firmly in the arms of baccus
You can decide on its relevance for yourself, but to establish its accuracy please feel free to ask Les in the Bradworthy Inn how often I am in the pub by 10pm, how often I drink wine (I think 'baccus' means Bacchus), and how often I need to be held firmly in the arms of anyone.
So there you have it. Hopefully you can understand why we of the Bradworthy News no longer conduct business with they of the Post Office and Stores.
Finally, on a lighter note, thanks to Paul Lavis and Eric Mitchell for the photos of the Fair and Dog Show. I was told that the in-focus photos were taken by one of them, and the fuzzy ones by the fuzzy one. As is usual, the deadline for the November issue is 20th October. Items for inclusion should reach the editor, Phil Mayhall, Hillcrest, Lower Village (Tel: 241748, Fax:241167, e-mail: hip-hop@bradworthy.co.uk)
Disclaimer: I don't think we need one this month because it's all true. However, for consistency I guess we'll just have to disclaim all responsibility, knowledge, liability, and so on.
