Are you a carer?

A carer is someone who looks after a relative, friend or child with an illness or disability within their own home.

It is estimated that there are 6.8 million carers in Britain, (1 in 7 adults) and at least 40,000 young carers., on average each GP has 270 carers on their list. 41% of those cared for would be unable to look after themselves at all and 75% of carers receive no regular help from family or friends.

Torridge Caring, part of Torridge Voluntary Services aims to help improve the quality of life of carers in the Torridge district by-providing an holistic service which offers both practical and emotional support to the highest standard. Volunteers are used to provide the opportunity for carers to have some 'time out'. They will sit/befriend the cared for person providing company and supervision. Carer Relief Workers provide the same opportunity as voluntary sitters, but are trained to provide personal care for those who are more disabled or incapacitated.

The Carer Support Worker is able to offer emotional support, problem solving, form filling and financial skills. She can also arrange practical help like shopping, gardening, transport and someone to 'sit in'. If necessary she will visit you in your home.

If you are a carer and would like more information or, if you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please ring Liz Tee, Carer Support Worker/Co-ordinator on 01237 424477.
