Bradworthy News - October 1999

Country commentator, by Trevor Sillifant

As we come into October the days are starting to draw in but we hope for some days of sunshine to be able to do a few more jobs outdoors. This is a good time to remind you about Neighbourhood Watch which is ongoing in all areas of our village and parish, Please do contact the Police or Jennifer, the local co-ordinator - telephone 01409 241 375, if you see anyone or anything strange that may be a cause for concern and do please note the numbers of cars, this is a great help to the Police.

People who do not often make the news…

Mrs. Rhoda Jennings. Rhoda lives with her husband, Garfield, at 1 Barridon Cottage. Many years ago she came to Bradworthy from nearby Chilsworthy. She has been a helper with the children at the school and a supporter and worker for charity by way of a local collector. She is always cheerful and will stop for a chat, in fact she is a very good person to meet and have a chat with.

Church news…

At the recent Methodist Conference the Ordination of John C. Peak has taken place. He is the Minister in Local Appointment (MLA) who is a Minister in the Bude Circuit and has oversight of Bradworthy Methodist Church and lives at Foxwood near Woolsery.

Fact file…

The Northern Devon Health Care Trust has a cash shortfall this year of £1.5m. Last December 238 badgers were shot in Devon by MAFF. Some local farms are on the market for up to £500,000. There are 804 electors listed on the Bradworthy Register of Electors.

Farming…

Torridge Vale Dairy has a new life. For many years local milk producers sent milk to this Torrington factory. As the former Dairy Crest it was purchased in 1997 by a group of farmers and has this year started production of Definitely Devon Products and now employs a staff of 15 and processes about 50,000 litres of milk from around 50 local farms.

Jokes…

Never chase girls or buses - there will always be another one coming soon. Customer in a restaurant. "Waiter, there's a button in my salad." Waiter. "Quite right sir, it's part of the dressing." Why did the cat join the Red Cross? Because it wanted to be a first aid kit.

Comment…

The new Dog Fouling Order came into force in June and if witnessed and reported this offence will mean a court case with a maximum penalty of £1000. This problem has caused much concern in and around the village and in many parts of the TDC District. At last the law can be enforced so please do clean up after your dog, this will help everyone.
