Bradworthy News - July 1999

Editorial, by Phil Mayhall

The sun it comes - and almost as quickly it goes. Am I the only person in the village who reckons it's damned cold? Still it'll soon be Carnival time. My favourite moment is when they go round and put up the bunting - no-one ever seems sure which bit of bunting stretches from which lamp-post to which (well, they do but they don't seem to agree on it). Anyway, lets hope for a bit of sun - well a lot of sun, to be truthful. Oh, and if you don't find the date and times of the Treasure Hunt, procession, or whatever, in this issue it's because no-one has told us.

I was about to write that this is the last issue before the summer break, but I'm afraid it isn't, is it. I've still got to do a mid-summer (August) issue. So, if you've got anything to write, say, draw or whatever - get it to me before the 20th July for inclusion in the mid-summer edition. Remember - especially if you're planning a party or something in September - that it will be the last issue until the beginning of October.

I was delighted that this issue contains at least 11 pages promoting the sustainability ideal. I really must start using some of that eco-friendly paper! (no Jane, I'm only jesting - the box reads 'made from only the best quality Brazilian rain-forests', so it must be ok because that's where they have all the eco-summits, etc. Or was it where Peter Mandellson got caught with his tackle down? I forget!)

You may remember that in the March issue I printed an article about an incinerator at Rowden Farm, that claimed the Tetcott Hunt had been forced to apply for retrospective planning permission - at which point the original authors disappeared into the woodwork. Thanks a lot. In the April issue, under the threat of legal action, I was asked by Alan Colwill of the Tetcott Hunt to print an apology on the grounds that the article was 'without basis in fact' - and of course I was only too happy to do so. I was therefore a little surprised to read in the North Cornwall District Council planning notices in the 17th June Holsworthy Post a planning application for Rowden Farm that reads "Continued use of... building as incineration area previously converted without consent for Tetcott Hunt". Confused? Apart from being used as a political football, I don't know what's going on either - perhaps someone would care to tell us - perhaps you could all just kindly go away and squabble somewhere else.

Many thanks for this month's cover, which is one of the Bradworthy Kneeler project cushions.

Disclaimer: Disclaimers in the Bradworthy News are cumulative. Previous disclaimers apply insofar as they don't imply guilt on my part. Any disclaimer that might contradict any other disclaimer is depracated if it is counter-intuitive to the general meaning of the term 'disclaimer'. Also it wasn't the Bradwrthy News nor none of its contributrs, writrs, authrs, printrs, drawrs that started this abbreviation thing. It was fwTony. No, don't ask. Anyway, due to his receding hairline Tony, at the tender age of 42, has recently been appointed as Bradworthy's Follicle Observer. So now you can happily refer to him by his new title, foTony.
