Bradworthy News - May 1999

Editorial, by Phil Mayhall

An interesting item on the tv the other evening. The House of Lords had a debate as the whether it should be "an hereditary peer" or "a hereditary peer". The outcome was "a....", which is wrong! This follows hard on the heels of Betty Boothroyd’s ruling on the plural of referendum - should it be referendums or referenda? Betty went for ...ums because it was good anglo-saxon (wrong, on both counts). No wonder the standard of Inglish is slipping when our lords and masters can’t get it write.

To save the council a bit of money I suggest that Bradworthy needs a cycle path through the village - grants are available to mark them out. Then by simply deciding that the cycle paths must run along the the middle of the road they won’t need to paint white lines on the road.

To mark the millennium it has been suggested that this year’s Carnival procession should go around the village in the opposite direction. I thought it was a magnificent idea.

This month’s cover has been provided by Joe Gifford, for which many thanks. The deadline for the June issue is 20th May, and you need to get your material to the editor, Phil Mayhall (tel: 241748, fax: 241167, snail-mail: Hillcrest, Lower Village or e-mail)

To visit the (full-colour) official Bradworthy News web-site from now on you’ll need to type www.tamachain.com - you’ll also need one of those computer things, I guess. While you’re there you might like to check out the latest Bradworthy web site at http://members.aol.com/bradworthy/index.html which has been created by Bradworthy’s very own resident IT expert, Eric Mitchell - little more than a 5 minute job for our Eric it wasn’t apparently.

Disclaimer: If you know of any reason, let or hindrance then I’d advise to to visit your doctor. If on the other hand you reckon there’s something incorrect, inappropriate, ill-advised or illegal in this month’s Bradworthy News don’t just bottle it up inside you, let off a bit of steam by telling the magazine’s latest star attraction - yes, we’ve managed to retain the services of Bradworthy’s favourite Agony Aunt Mr. fwTony, who is always happy to listen to your problems, needs and gripes. Occassionally he might even be paying attention! Anyway, don’t blame me as I’m called Ethelbert and all I write is the disclaimer.
