Bradworthy News - February 1999

Country commentator, by Trevor Sillifant

I hope you had a very enjoyable Christmas and saw in this new year, the last one in the 20th century. One wonders what life may be like in a hundred years time when maybe travels in space will be common and if country and village life will still be going. My hope is for peace and that all people of the world will be turned away from hate and war which has been very much in the last one hundred years. Maybe this is just a dream?

New Year jokes

What do lawyers wear in court? A lawsuit! Why is your shirt all wet? Well the label said `wash and wear'! What do you call a rooster that wakes you at the same time every morning? An alarm cock!

People who don't often make the news

Nigel Bond. Nigel is a member of the well known Bradworthy family of the Bonds. He is a first class and very hard working mobile mechanic who, I am told, is also a very good darts player. He recently found fame as a crack shot being a member of the England team. Nigel is always ready to help anyone in need and we are very proud that he comes from Bradworthy and now is a sporting competitor for his country, may he continue to do well, he deserves to.

From the papers

There is a rethink on a defence flood scheme for Bideford. Farmers say that BSE in sheep is not true and scaremongering. Doctors are to have more say in running of health services. More lottery handouts are coming to this area of the South west. Banks are to raise charges to withdraw money from counter services. A woman of 82 was trapped for two days in a bath. The new film "Saving of Private Ryan" has mixed reviews.

What they said

I have sinned (US President Clinton). I fell in love with Bill Clinton (Monica Lewinsky). I will stand by my husband (Hillary Clinton). Some of my MPs are yesterday's men (William Hague). New Labour has changed the face of our country (Tony Blair). The Lib-Dems will win more local council seats (Paddy Ashdown). I have found a new Robin (ex-wife of Robin Cook). I have been unwell (Esther Rantzen).

Fact file

Every five minutes someone in Britain suffers a stroke. It is reported that drinking tea can help prevent cancer and heart disease. It is good for our health so they say take a garlic capsule every day. Guernsey and Jersey have more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the UK. People working in the South west have the lowest incomes.

Comment

Exeter airport has been in operation for 60 years, starting off in a small way and now having chartered services and link ups to all parts of the world. Having mainly used the JEA services there my feeling is that this airport gives a good service and as a travel centre it is very helpful with information. The cost of meals seems to be very high and often it is a problem to park. As the airport is managed by a company wholly owned by DCC constant updating of services there are being undertaken for the public. I for one will continue to use Exeter for future air flights.

Farming news

The Government has on stream a scientific study to investigate the link between tuberculosis in cattle and badgers. Local land is in the areas that are to be investigated as TB is still a real problem on some local farms. The trading standards and consumer protection department of DCC now require farmers movement and breeding records, farmers are warned to keep records up to date as inspections can take place at any time.

From the church to the people

The Church army has just appointed 11 evangelists to work on new projects in most parts of the country. They also have on release a publicity video about the work that the army is doing. The Shebbear circuit of the Methodist Church now has a new lay worker and deacon Anita Hart wife of Shebbear College chaplain the Re. David Hart.

Roundup

Last September when Jennifer and myself were on a working visit to Dorset we stayed for 2 nights at a 17th century guest/farm house at Fifehead St. Quintin near Sturminster Newton where we had good hospitality. We wondered about those who had lived and worked and stayed there over the years and their life style. There is a real need for members of the public to offer themselves as SPCs if you think you fit the bill contact any policeman or Holsworthy Police station. On my trips around the village I notice a lot of litter being mainly chip, sweet packets as well as a large number of larger, beer and drinks cans. Please pick up litter and use the bins. We want our village to be litter free.
